David Coulthard produzierte 1995 in Adelaide einen der legendärsten Unfälle der Formel-1-Geschichte. Der Schotte crashte seinen Williams in Führung liegend bei der Einfahrt in die Boxengasse in die Mauer. Auch fast 25 Jahre später ist das Video des Vorfalls im Internet noch immer ein Hit. Aus Sicht von Coulthard war es allerdings ein teurer Spaß.
"Das hat mich 2,5 Millionen gekostet", verrät der heute 48-Jährige im Vlog von Nico Rosberg und erklärt: "Mein Bonus bei Williams war eine halbe Million pro Sieg." Doppelt bitter: Der Crash hatte auch Auswirkungen auf seinen McLaren-Vertrag ab 1996. "Wenn ich 1995 zwei Rennen gewonnen, hätten sie mir bei dem Zweijahresvertrag pro Jahr eine Million mehr gezahlt", verrät Coulthard.
Hintergrund: Adelaide war 1995 das letzte Saisonrennen und Coulthards letztes Rennen für Williams. Für die kommenden Jahre hatte er bereits bei McLaren unterschrieben. Und weil Coulthard 1995 zuvor bereits in Portugal gewonnen hatte, hätte sich mit einem weiteren Erfolg in Adelaide der zusätzliche Bonus aktiviert. Doch Coulthards Fehler verhinderte das.
