Das wohl am schlechtesten gehütete Geheimnis der Formel 1 ist gelüftet: Lance Stroll wird 2019 Stammfahrer bei Force India. Der Kanadier galt seit der Übernahme des Rennstalles durch ein Konsortium um Vater Lawrence als logischer Kandidat beim Team aus Silverstone und wurde sogar schon während der Saison 2018 ins Cockpit geschrieben, doch bis jetzt gab es keine offizielle Bestätigung.

Jetzt ist die Katze aber aus dem Sack: "Ich bin froh, endlich bestätigen zu können, dass Lance zu uns wechselt und nächstes Jahr neben Sergio [Perez] fahren wird", sagt Teamchef Otmar Szafnauer. "Dadurch haben wir eine aufregende Fahrerpaarung mit der perfekten Mischung aus Jugend, Talent und Erfahrung. Denn Lance ist erst 20 Jahre alt, hat aber bereits zwei Jahre Formel-1-Erfahrung, darunter ein Podestplatz und ein Start aus der ersten Reihe. Wir sehen bei ihm enormes Potenzial und glauben, dass wir Lance eine Umgebung bieten können, in der er aufblühen wird."

Stroll selbst spricht vom "Beginn eines unglaublich aufregenden Kapitels" in seiner Formel-1-Karriere und meint: "Ich freue mich auf die Arbeit mit einem erfolgreichen Team, das eine großartige Arbeitskultur hat. Es ist eine neue Herausforderung, die ich unbedingt nutzen will."

Während Strolls Teamkollege Perez bereits vor seiner sechsten Saison bei Force India steht, geht Stroll überhaupt erst in sein drittes Grand-Prix-Jahr. Bislang war er zwei Jahre für Williams unterwegs, wo er die Gesamtränge zwölf und 18 belegte. Sein bestes Rennergebnis fuhr er 2017 in Baku ein, als er sensationell Dritter werden konnte. Auch 2018 war Aserbaidschan seine beste Platzierung (Rang acht), weitere Erfolg blieben aufgrund der Williams-Schwäche aber aus.

Seinen ersten Einsatz für das neue Racing-Point-Team hat der Kanadier in dieser Woche bereits hinter sich gebracht: Bei den Testfahrten in Abu Dhabi belegte Stroll am Dienstag und Mittwoch jeweils den dritten Platz.

Stroll ersetzt den Franzosen Esteban Ocon, der für 2019 die Rolle des Test- und Ersatzfahrers bei Mercedes übernommen hat. Und mit der Bekanntgabe von Stroll bei Force India sind nun auch alle Cockpits für die Formel-1-Saison 2019 fix vergeben.
