IndyCar 2019: Ausrangierte Formel-1-Fahrer im Fokus

Nicht nur Fernando Alonso, auch andere Fahrer, die in der Formel 1 keinen Platz mehr finden, könnten 2019 in der IndyCar-Serie unterkommen

Fernando Alonso ist nicht der einzige ehemalige beziehungsweise derzeit noch aktive Formel-1-Pilot, der bei IndyCar-Teams für die Saison 2019 auf dem Radar ist. Stoffel Vandoorne, Esteban Ocon und Pascal Wehrlein stehen allesamt bei verschiedenen Teambesitzern ganz weit oben auf der Liste. Nach den jüngsten Ereignissen wäre mit Marcus Ericsson ein weiterer Formel-1-Fahrer zu haben.

Vandoorne wurde Anfang September von McLaren informiert, dass er von Rookie Lando Norris ersetzt werden wird. Der GP2-Meister von 2015 hat in der Formel 1 keinerlei Optionen mehr und hat daher Gespräche mit Dale Coyne begonnen. Dieser bestätigt gegenüber 'Motorsport.com': "Wir haben mit ihm gesprochen, aber ich kann nicht sagen, ob das irgendwo hin führt. Aber würde sagen, dass ich vorsichtig interessiert bin." Er bekräftigt auf Nachfrage, dass es um eine komplette Saison ginge und nicht um eine Teilsaison mit Einsätzen auf Rund- und Straßenkursen.

Coyne gibt zu, dass er auch an Esteban Ocon interessiert sei, der in der Formel-1-Saison 2019 für das Force-India-Team und dessen Nachfolger Racing Point unterwegs ist, aber für das kommende Jahr keinen Platz mehr hat. Der Franzose hat 2014 die Formel-3-EM und 2015 die GP3-Serie gewonnen. Da Ocon allerdings noch bei Mercedes unter Vertrag ist, könnte es zu Komplikationen kommen.

Diese Hürde besteht bei Pascal Wehrlein mittlerweile nicht mehr. Deshalb hat Coyne vor, auch den Deutschen zu kontaktieren. Allerdings ist der ehemalige Sauber-Pilot aktuell auch ein Kandidat für das zweite Toro-Rosso-Cockpit in der Formel 1. Solange diese Chance besteht, wird er sich kaum auf IndyCar festlegen.

Dennoch kann es auch passieren, dass Sebastien Bourdais der einzige ehemalige Formel-1-Pilot bei Dale Coyne bleibt. Denn der Teambesitzer befindet sich auch tiefen Gesprächen mit Pietro Fittipaldi und Formel-2-Raudi Santino Ferrucci, der bei den letzten beiden Rennen der IndyCar-Saison 2018 in einem dritten Fahrzeug saß. Coyne stellt aber klar, dass er 2019 nur zwei Vollzeit-Autos einsetzen und wenn möglich keine Alternierung bei den Fahrern haben möchte wie noch in diesem Jahr. Und er ist auf Geldgeber angewiesen. Da haben Ferrucci und Fittipaldi mehr zu bieten als die drei Europäer.

Hier kommen andere Teams ins Spiel: Auch Sam Schmidt hat 'Motorsport.com' berichtet, dass er Interesse an Vandoorne, Ocon und Wehrlein habe. Doch er bestätigt auch, dass es noch keinen direkten Kontakt gegeben habe. Aufgrund von Robert Wickens' unklarer Zukunft ist er auf der Suche nach einem möglichen Ersatz, während sich der Kanadier weiter erholt.

Ein weiteres IndyCar-Team, das gute Verbindungen nach Europa hat, ist Carlin. Teamchef Trevor Carlin hofft, für die IndyCar-Saison 2019 auf drei Autos expandieren zu können. Das Team war 2018 neu in die IndyCar-Serie eingestiegen.
